In World War II, to
facilitate rapid production, the Model 1903 underwent some modifications, and as
the Model 1903 A3, made on contract, was equipped with an adjustable rear sight
set on the bridge of the receiver. Some of these limited standard, contract
arms, had parts, such as trigger guard, bands and other furniture stamped rather
hastily out of sheet metal.
Our
specimen is marked on top of the receiver “U.S.” REMINGTON” “MODEL 03-A3” and
serial number 4194698 in four lines. The barrel is marked behind the front
sight “RA”, flaming bomb, “12-43” indicating the date of manufacture. The
bottom of the stock behind the trigger guard is marked “4” “P” in two lines.
The bottom of the stock in front of the trigger guard is marked with four
cartouches, “13” “M” “72” “OG”. The left side of the stock under the receiver
is marked “RA” “FJA” and a design. The left rear of the stock is marked “OG”.
